Climate Action & Carbon Management
- Net Zero Target: BPCL aims to achieve Net Zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2040, aligning with India’s 2070 goal.
- Total Scope 1 emissions 9.68 million Metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent
- Total Scope 2 emissions 0.72 million Metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent
- GHG Emission Reduction: Achieved an 8.64 MMTCO2e reduction through various initiatives.

- Green Hydrogen: Mumbai and Bina refineries will transition to Green Hydrogen, contributing 15% to emission reductions.
- Bio-CNG: Plans to establish 200+ plants injecting 1.30 MMT Bio-CNG annually into City Gas Distribution networks.
- Carbon Capture & Offsets: Capturing 4.20 MMTPA CO2 across refineries and investing in afforestation and carbon market initiatives.
Energy Efficiency & Sustainable Operations
- Energy Conservation (ENCON): Reduced specific energy consumption across all three refineries.
- Energy Efficient Lighting (EEL): Achieved 100% EEL across Mumbai, Bina, Pipelines, and other units.
- Innovation in Energy Transition: ₹1,299.58 crore invested in clean energy projects, including solar and wind farms.
Water & Biodiversity Conservation
- Water Management:
- 10,198 TKL wastewater recycled, 640 TKL rainwater harvested, increasing catchment area by 12.89%.
- Green Cover & Carbon Sequestration:
- Planted 1,60,000 trees in FY 2023-24 (cumulative 1.05 million trees).
- 23,600 MTCO2e sequestered through afforestation.
- Developing a 90-hectare green belt in MP with ₹1.96 crore investment.
Waste Management
- Total waste generated 1,67,851 metric tonnes of which 1,58,143 metric tonnes recycled
- Zero Waste to Landfill: All marketing and refinery locations certified (Kochi pending by September 2024).
- 5R-principle Implementation: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.
- Hazardous Waste Management: 1,15,862 MT hazardous waste recycled.
- Plastic Waste Disposal: 4,891 MT plastic waste collected and reprocessed under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Sustainable Mobility & Biofuels
- Bio-Ethanol Plant in Odisha: Producing 2G Bio-Ethanol from agricultural waste and surplus rice.
- Reducing Scope 3 Emissions: Continuously tracking and reducing operational emissions through sustainable fuel adoption.
