Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is focusing climate action along two broad areas of work: technology and corporate efforts. Under technological innovation, an array of clean and environment friendly technologies have been introduced which has resulted in improved environmental performances and reduced specific CO2 emission. SAIL being a pioneering climate resilient steel maker have adopted many energy-efficient technologies & CO2 emission mitigation technologies that has enabled the company in reducing specific energy consumption by 3.7% and specific CO2 emission by 12.7% in last ten years. Several plants are exploring the use of renewable energy in their operations. Under corporate efforts, solar lighting systems have been installed at the hospitals, Guest Houses, inside plant premises and in peripheral villages of SAIL plants. SAIL set Net-Zero targets by 2070, with a phased approach. In the short term (by 2030), it focuses on reducing carbon emissions through energy efficiency and renewable energy. For the medium term (2030-2047), SAIL will emphasize Green Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). In the long term (2047-2070), it plans to adopt disruptive technological innovations to achieve full transition to net-zero. SAIL is also committed to reduce its CO2 emission intensity and will strive to reduce CO2 emissions, much lower than the Government of India’s NDC commitment of 2.30 T/tcs of CO2 emissions by 2030.

As per the sustainability report 2022 – 2023, SAIL has planted over 22 million trees were planted since inception across SAIL Plants and Mines. Company has also set a plantation target of 5 lakh saplings every year in its Vision Document to contribute to India’s NDC of creating an additional ‘carbon sink’ of 2.5 to 3.0 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.
