NTPC Ltd., as a leading PSE working in a hard-to-abate sector, has outlined a TBL (Triple Bottom Line) framework and setting new benchmarks in sustainability along the entire energy value chain. Company set the Brighter Plan 2032 which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and India’s INDCs and other commitments for Sustainability. The Brighter Plan 2032 aims to accelerate NTPC’s efforts in leading the energy transition to a decentralised, decarbonised and digitalised energy future in 7 key areas- decarbonization, air emissions, water and biodiversity conservation, circular economy, health and safety, community development, strong finance and ethics, and sustainable supply chains. NTPC has developed a dedicated program called the NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA) to support internal transition to low-carbon technology use. The focus areas of NETRA are – Efficiency Improvement & Cost Reduction; New & Renewable Energy; Climate Change & Environmental protection which includes water conservation, Ash utilization, carbon capture, and utilization & Waste Management. 1% of the profits are allocated for this venture. NTPC plans to make its townships net zero in Scope-II emissions by FY2025-26. NTPC’s Kudgi Township, Ratnagiri Township, and NETRA Office Complex are already pursuing Net Zero Energy and Water certifications, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability. Furthermore, NTPC plans add 60 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity by 2032. This includes: 3 GW of RE under operation; 12 GW under implementation; 4.9 GW under tendering process. NTPC is creating Carbon Sinks by planting trees – Company has planted 38 million cumulative number of trees at plant and outside the plant (since inception up to March’23) and set a target of planting 1 million trees annually till 2026.
