GAIL has been one of the pioneers of climate action in the public sector. The company has set target to achieve Net-Zero (scope 1 and scope 2) status by 2040, while reducing their scope 3 emission by 35% (from baseline year of 2020-2021) by 2040. In 2024, company reported significant achievements: reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions, consuming 5.77 million GJ of energy, and implementing energy management initiatives such as LED replacements and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) at multiple sites. As per the Sustainability Report 2022-23, to cut its carbon footprints, company is venturing into green hydrogen production and aims to set 3 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. GAIL’s pilot project of hydrogen blending in CGD Network is now blending 5% v/v hydrogen in AGL’s PNG network and we are also setting up a 1O MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen production in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, as we march towards establishing a hydrogen economy in India. GAIL has undertaken several sustainable initiatives to reduce emissions including: monitoring and regulating emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Standards; innovative projects like the rich – lean gas corridor project at Jhabua; reducing leakages from transmission and pipelines; and commissioning solar PV projects across India. GAIL’s sustainability commitment emphasizes minimizing environmental impacts through operational excellence and continuous improvement.
GAIL achieved FTSE ESG Rating as a part of the London Stock Exchange Group Sustainability Index for the year 2023. Extensive corporate efforts have also been promoted around energy efficiency and encouraging employees to avoid traveling and attend meetings through video conferencing.
